How do I get a driver’s license?
A driver’s license comes from the state where you live, not from a national DMV. USA.gov links to each state’s motor-vehicle office. Use that office’s list of documents and tests. There is no checklist that works in every state.
What to do next
- Open USA.gov’s state motor-vehicle page and follow the link for your state.
- Ask that state which identification it accepts, and what the knowledge and road tests involve. A list written for another state can be wrong for you.
- Auto insurance minimums are also set by the state. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners explains the idea. Coverage amounts are not copied here.
